Honk If You Love Those Missionaries!

It is easy to recognize a young man who is serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – they wear dark pants, white shirts and of course, the name tag.  I see them as I drive across town, while visiting in Colorado, and at the airport.  Always, when I see them, a smile spreads across my face.  For those of us wondering if these young Elders (and Sisters!) like the waves and honks, here is what Nathan had to say:

“At the fundraiser dinner, when we got to the place to buy our tickets, they said like 10 people had offered to pay for us.  And most of this area is far from wealthy.  It is just crazy how much people like us.  There have been multiple times that people have tried (sometimes successfully) to give us money.  Members and non-members.  And as many people yell profanities or “hail satan” at us, we get a lot of positive yells and waves too.  You can always tell if they are members or not.  If they say “God bless”, they aren’t a member.  But I can see why it will be so hard to go home, nothing like that will ever happen again.  We saw some members when we were running one morning and we waved, but since we weren’t in proselytizing clothes, they didn’t wave back or anything.  You take off that tag and no one cares who you are, it is a pretty weird change.  You also don’t get as many weird looks though.”OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What a sad statement for we LDS if we can’t recognize our Elders without their name tags. Maybe a lesson here is we should. Be accepting to all we see. A smile is always welcome and doesn’t cause us facial pain. An eye opener for me. Thank you Nathan for such a simple lesson!
